Hip And Knee Pain


The hip joint supports the weight of your upper body, relying on multiple muscles and tissues to keep it mobile and stable so it can function properly. This is a “ball and socket” joint with good mobility and great stability.

Your knee is a hinge joint, confined to forward-and-backward motion. Functionally your hips and knees make up a combination of weight-bearing joints that must function together in harmony in order for your body to transfer body weight and sustain static posture. Consequently, a problem with your knee joint may transmit abnormal forces to your hips, and vice versa.

Pain felt in the hips and/or knees may originate in the joints themselves, but it may also be a result of an underlying condition in another part of the body


Problem with your lower back might present as hip pain and/or knee pain

Pelvic organs can cause hip/groin, buttock pain

Being the main weight bearing joints, hip and knees are predisposed to similar disorders, and injuries.

  • Tendinopathies ( eg.Gluteal, Hamstrings, Patella tendons)
  • Muscle strain (Hamstrings, Quadriceps, Hip adductors)
  • Osteoarthritis (Hip and Knee are the most commonly effected joints)

However, there are some painful conditions that may be specific to one joint or the other.

The Hip joint :

– Femoracetabular impingement (FAI)

– Labral tear

– GTPS (Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome- still referred to as Trochanteric Bursitis)

The Knee Joint :

– Meniscus tears

– ACL,PCL ( cruciate ligaments injuries)

– Patelo-femoral joint problems (kneecap pain)

– ITB pain (Ilio-Tibial pain syndrome)
